FilterMitt Berm™
FilterMitt Berm™ at Groundscapes Express, Inc.
The FilterMitt Berm™ is a compost-based erosion control and stormwater management system designed to slow runoff, trap sediment, and protect nearby wetlands and waterways. The system is constructed using three FilterMitt™, arranged with two positioned at the base and one placed on top, forming a stable triangular configuration that provides increased structural strength and flow capacity. FilterMitt Berm™ is typically installed in areas where higher volumes of stormwater runoff are anticipated. Each FilterMitt™ consists of a biodegradable burlap casing filled with a blend of finished compost and wood fiber, known as FiberRoot Mulch™. This compost-based material supports beneficial microbial activity that can help break down pollutants commonly found in stormwater, including hydrocarbons and pesticides. The natural burlap shell is fully biodegradable, gradually decomposing into the surrounding soil and eliminating the need for removal while leaving no synthetic waste behind. Because the materials are organic, locally produced, and contribute to improved soil health after installation, FilterMitt Berm™ provides an environmentally responsible alternative to traditional erosion control methods while delivering effective sediment control and stormwater filtration.
Advantages
- Free-standing berms can be adapted to a wide variety of site situations
- Can be easily scaled up during installation to accommodate large volumes of runoff
- If used as a temporary control, the mulch material can be raked out and distributed onsite to amend soil after service life of the berm is over
- Detains surface-water flows
- Water-borne sediment retained behind berm
- Traps, holds, and breaks down petroleum-based, hydrocarbon pollutants
- Compatible with revegetation
Product Variations
- Variable size range: Typical applications range from approximately 1 ft. high x 2 ft. wide to 1.5 ft. high x 3 ft. wide.
- 9″ FilterMitt™ Berm is approximately 18″ high and 18″ wide.
- 12″ FilterMitt™ Berm is approximately 20 “high and 36” wide.
Application
- Can be used as FilterMitts™ in many situations, on flat areas and slopes to direct, detain, and slow runoff.
- Before installation, heavy vegetation should be removed to expose soil.
- FilterMitt™ Berms should be used in higher flow water areas on site.
- Construction sites with rocky surfaces, cement, or pavement, our FilterMitt Berm™ offers a superior alternative to traditional trenched in silt fence.
Specifications & Drawings
- Approximately 8 cu. yds. FiberRootMulch™ per 100 linear feet of FilterMitt Berm.
