FilterMitt™
FilterMitt™ at Groundscapes Express, Inc.
FilterMitt™ is a compost-based erosion control and stormwater management device consisting of elongated tubes made from biodegradable burlap fabric filled with a blend of compost and partially decomposed shredded woody material. This engineered mixture allows the device to slow runoff, trap sediment, and support microbial activity that can help break down pollutants commonly found in stormwater.
FilterMitts™ provide flexible, multi-function use for applications such as slope stabilization, perimeter control, check dams, inlet protection, and wetland buffers. A standard 12-inch FilterMitt™ weighs approximately 30 pounds per linear foot, making it two to three times heavier than most traditional erosion control devices, which improves stability during storm events.
Staking is typically not required, except on 2:1 slopes or steeper, where stakes are installed behind the device rather than through it to maintain the integrity of the burlap casing.
FilterMitts™ can be installed on site using pneumatic blower system, which ensures consistent density and effective height, or they may be picked up in 10-foot sections upon request. Made from organic, locally produced materials and biodegradable burlap, FilterMitts™ have one of the lowest carbon footprints among erosion control devices, and they naturally decompose over time without leaving synthetic waste behind.
Advantages
- Flexible: Can be used alone or with other methods
- Biodegradable: No synthetic materials or plastics
- Retains sediment
- Microbes in compost break down petroleum pollutants
- Detains or directs surface stormwater flow
- Can be applied any time of year, even on frozen ground
- No need for trenching or soil disturbance to install
- No need to remove after functional life cycle is done
- Navigable for turtles and other wildlife
- Compost enhances soil, aids in revegetation applications
Application
- FilterMitts™ are a pre construction and post construction product
- Prevents sediments from entering wetlands and surface waters
- The material inside of FilterMitt™ can be used to cover up and disturbed soil
- Can be arranged to break up and disperse concentrated flows
- Can be set along slope contours to slow, spread, and detain flows
- Can be used as check dams in channels
- Protect stormwater inlets
Product Variations
- The FilterMitt™ casing is a natural burlap (Hessian) plant-based fabric with size (diameter) options of 9, 12, and 18 inches.
- The basic mitt can be configured in a number of different configurations to address specific site needs.
- FilterMitt™ used with Earth Blanket for optimum performance or for higher water flow areas use a 9″ FilterMitt™ Berm
